SIMPLE SERIES 002: KURTARAN EV

We visited Kurtaran Ev to discuss their efforts towards supporting animals in need and their struggles. We also talked about the importance of ‘foster homes’ and the importance of regular donation at   Kurtaran Ev to help as many animals possible.

We have also prepared some easy steps for those who want to support.

SEDEN: CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT KURTARAN EV.

KURTARAN EV: We are a non-profit rescue and rehoming organization operating in Istanbul, Turkey.

SEDEN: WHAT IS THE PHILOSOHY OF KURTARAN EV?

KURTARAN EV: Our mission is to rescue animals in need from the street, urban areas and shelters, rehabilitate them and find them forever homes.

SEDEN: What is your capacity?

KURTARAN EV: As a group of individual animal rescuers, we rented a delapatated house in 2019, did it up ourselves and established a safe habitat for the stray animals we rescued from the streets and public shelters. 

When the number of dogs under our responsibility increased, we rented a farm area on the outskirts of İstanbul and turned our project into an Charity that focused on spaying and rehoming. 

Currently, in our 3 branches, we take care of around 800 dogs, nearly 300 cats. 4 donkeys. We also do street feedings 4 days a week, in 3 different urban areas.

SEDEN: You have been working very actively since the 2023 EARTHQUAKE. how do you manage the post-disaster period?

KURTARAN EV: 2023 Earthquake Response:

•We created an Adoption & Fostering database for the cats and dogs rescued from the disaster zones. More than 10,000 forms were filled across Turkey.•Our volunteer team carried out the screening of the forms, the preparation of the new homes, and coordinated with volunteer veterinary clinics for injured animals.•120 rescued dogs entered the Farm. First intervention, treatment and evaluation were performed under the guidance of a veterinarian.•We places 42 cats in foster homes. •Any surviving owners of the animals were contacted by checking  registered chips. Plans were made according to the owners situation; new homes, fostering or transporting the animal to where the owners were located.•A list of 35 volunteer dog trainers was collated to support the dogs placed in new homes.

Companies with gardens and factories were contacted to rehome some of the Kangal and large breeds.

Rehomed dogs will be neutered and chipped by the company or by Kurtaran Ev.

SEDEN: HOW CAN SOMEONE ADOPT A DOG OR A CAT?

KURTARAN EV: 

1.Potential adopters fill out our detailed online adoption forms.

2.We then have a phone call interview and request a detailed video of their home.

3.Weorganisea face-to-face meeting at our Farm or Cat Sanctuary depending on the adoption type.

4.We sign an adoptionagreementand we closely monitor how the settling in stage is going.

5.We continue to support the adopters as much as possible on issues such as adaptation problems or behavioral issues.

6.If the adoption isterminatedwe require the adopted animal to be returned to us as soon as possible.

You can see the endless love in her eyes.

SEDEN:What is temporary home?

KURTARAN EV: Fostering Saves Lives!

Fostering animals is a new concept in Turkey. We promote our Fosteing Programme through social media, during our school presentations and our work with corporate companies. 

We have had great success with rehoming non-breed, disabled and overlooked cats and dogs. When we have an adoption termination we have a chance to place the animal into a foster home, rather than it come back to the general population in our facilities.

Foster homes during the 2023 Earthquake have been vital for us.

SEDEN: HOW TO BECOME A TEMPORARY HOME?

KURTARAN EV: We have a Foster Home form that volunteers can fill out. We evaluate the forms and try to match the right dog with the foster home. Please keep in mind that fostering is not a ‘trial period’, but a chance for the dog to get used to home life and show it’s character in a low-stress environment.

MEET MANDO AKA ŞERİF EMİR

He is disabled born exotic bully. He has had Parvovirus and lived in quarantine until 11 months old.

His bones were not developed, he wasn't able to walk when he first met Selcan, his temporary home at the time.

Selcan was working long hours at a corporate job and he needed one-on-one attention, so he had to go to his second temporary home, but his disabilities made it difficult for him to find a temporary home.

He was so fragile, he needed to get the attention of a new born baby.

Selcan was followig him closely for 2 months before she quit her job and start working freelance as a fashion consultant.

Then, she was able to adopt Mando.

MANDO AS A FASHION CONSULTANT

Thanks to Selcan, Mando lives at a happy home with special care.

Mando got stronger in only 8 months. He is still deaf and have a crooked neck, but that did not stop him working as a fashion consultant. 

And he runs. :)

Yves was a Sharpei, which has been kept in a cage as a breeder, and when she got sick, they threw her out.

At the age of 6, Selcan adopted her. Though, she was able to keep her alive only for 1.5 years due to her serious kidney problems.

Yves learnt about being loved and had a happy home in her last years.

There are many dogs that cannot live on the street in our living spaces. These dogs, who cannot be adopted because they are blind, disabled or old, can live peacefully in Kurtaran Ev. But they need your help to keep up with the costs of food, vaccinations, and care.
